Human Override and Escalation
AI agents will need clear mechanisms for human override. This means designing systems where humans can intervene at any point in an automated process, where the agent recognizes situations that require human judgment, and where escalation paths are defined and tested.
This aligns with how responsible businesses are already deploying AI agents, but the standard will likely specify minimum requirements for override response times and escalation triggers.
Scope and Boundary Constraints
AI agents will need defined boundaries on what they can and cannot do. An agent authorized to respond to customer reviews should not be able to modify pricing. An agent authorized to send follow-up emails should not be able to commit to delivery timelines.
The standard is expected to require explicit scope documentation for each AI agent in a deployment, including what actions the agent is authorized to take, what data it can access, and what triggers require human approval.

The draft standards are not expected until Q3 2026, and final standards could be a year or more beyond that. So why should businesses care now?
First-mover advantage in compliance. Businesses that build their AI systems with these standards in mind from the beginning will have a significant advantage over those that need to retrofit compliance later. Retrofitting agent transparency and audit trails is expensive and disruptive.

Audit Your Current Agents
Document every AI agent in your deployment. What does it do? What data does it access? What actions can it take? Who is responsible for its performance? If you cannot answer these questions for every agent, start building that documentation.
Implement Logging
Every AI agent action should be logged with sufficient detail to reconstruct what happened and why. This includes the input the agent received, the model or system that processed it, the decision or action taken, and the timestamp. This is basic operational hygiene that also prepares you for compliance requirements.
Define Escalation Paths
For every AI agent process, define when and how a human takes over. Not just "the human can override" but specific criteria: what conditions trigger escalation, who receives the escalation, and what the expected response time is.
Disclose AI Usage
If your AI agents interact with customers, clients, or the public, start disclosing that they are AI now. Do not wait for the standard to require it. Transparency builds trust, and early disclosure establishes your business as a responsible AI deployer.
The Broader Picture
NIST's AI agent standards work is part of a broader shift toward structured governance of AI systems. The EU AI Act, state-level AI legislation in the US, and industry self-regulation are all converging toward a common set of expectations: transparency, accountability, human oversight, and defined scope.
